Can you hire ski helmets in resort?

Since the winter season 2008/2009, helmets have become more and more popular both with skiers and hire shops. In all major sport shops in ski resorts, the hiring of helmets is a popular area of hire equipment. It is therefore possible to hire helmets.

Can you use bike helmets for skiing?

A ski helemt is deigned differently to a bike helmet. One of the dangers of using a bike helmet whilst skiing is that is does not offer full protection of the skull so during a fall on snow, there is less protection. A bike helmet is designed to allow a constant stream of air through which is unideal for skiing and can lead to undercooling of the head.

What do I wear under a ski helmet?

It is recommended to wear a thin fleece or cotton balaclava under a helmet. There are many options available from the individual manufacturers.

Are cheap helmets safe?

After a bad fall, a helmet should be replaced even if no damage is visible. As a rule, a helmet should be replaced every 5 seasons as the UV rays on the mountains can cause damage to the material.

How do I know if my ski googles will fit on the helmet?

Ski googles that are too big will apply pressure on the bridge of your nose.

There should be a 5mm gap between the helmet and googles to stop any airflow interrupting the ski googles funstion.

If the gap is too large, then cold air will blow on the forehead and lead to undercooling.

If the googles do not fit the helmet, then they will not lie correctly on your temples.
